My surety journey began twenty years ago in lower Manhattan in my grandfather's surety agency.
The most important lesson I learned was to pay attention to service because that distinguishes an agent. He admonished and often reminded me to exert the same energy and effort for a client needing a $500.00 bond as one requiring a $5,000,000 bond. Clearly, he understood the meaning of service.
I learned the business from the ground up, and I was trained to underwrite by seasoned surety agents in that office. A number of outstanding insurance company underwriters further enhanced my surety education. Over time I acquired the expertise and wisdom to underwrite and handle every aspect of bonding.
Creativity is not an element that one naturally associates with surety, but there are many uses for surety bonds that exceed the standard boundaries. Surety is an effective tool that may be wielded to guarantee results for lawyers’ clients under many circumstances.
A surety bond is a tool for negotiation, and it should be recognized as such and implemented accordingly. Certainly, times and changes in the law affect the way surety is underwritten. Yet, the surety industry will evolve to continue to meet the needs of the legal community and the various government agencies that require bonds to guarantee performance.
There is a joke that travels through surety circles that no one leaves college with the surety business in his or her sights. I began my career as a commercial insurance agent and in little more than a year was re-evaluating my career path. That was when I found surety.
